Events on and in the water – Karlsruhe & Region

wasserWater is the basis of all life on earth. Yet this seemingly inexhaustible resource is becoming increasingly scarce in Germany and many other parts of the world. Droughts caused by climate change are leading to a decline in groundwater supplies and low water levels in rivers and lakes – with a negative impact on agriculture, industry and drinking water supplies. Pollution from residential, industrial and agricultural wastewater also pose a challenge. The expansion of settlements and transport areas is leading to the loss of more and more wetlands. These play an important role in the water cycle by storing and filtering water as well as regulating its flow.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is one of the leading research institutions in Germany in the field of water research. Research at KIT covers a wide range of topics, from hydrogeology and hydrology to aquatic ecology, fluid mechanics, hydraulic engineering, water chemistry and water technology. The researchers at KIT investigate the complex processes that take place in the water cycle. This includes analysing the influence of climate change, land use and other factors. KIT develops innovative technologies for water treatment, desalination and recycling. It aims to secure the water supply and reduce the environmental impact of water pollution. In addition, it is working on solutions for the sustainable management of water resources. This includes the development of strategies for saving water, protecting water bodies and adapting to climate change.

The Convention Bureau Karlsruhe & Region is proud to present attractive locations that are situated directly by or on the water.
For active travellers, the Convention Bureau has partners who offer canoe tours and activities on, in and above the water. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can indulge themselves on a tour in the Aaglander motor carriage.

1. Aaglander motor carriage
Whether as a couple or in a small group, with family, friends or business partners, an excursion in the AAGLANDER is an unforgettable experience that delights people of all ages. On this tour of the Rhine and Rieddörfer villages, the old branches of the Rhine, many of which are protected nature reserves, provide the setting for the drive, which is particularly popular with nature lovers. Travel by motor carriage along agricultural roads, past traditional orchards and through lovingly maintained villages to the banks of the Rhine. At the ferry landing stage in Rastatt-Plittersdorf, it’s time to relax, savour the landscape and watch the hustle and bustle on the Rhine while enjoying a coffee or a picnic.

2. KTG Karlsruhe Tourismus GmbH – Themed tour “Drinking water!”
The new themed tour “Drinking water! – a walking tour of Karlsruhe's drinking fountains” is a highly entertaining and informative journey of discovery, uncovering the secrets of our most important commodity. The new tour was designed in cooperation with Thomas Frank, water curator and board member of the European Fountain Society Karlsruhe. During this walk, which takes in six drinking fountains in Karlsruhe city centre, you will taste the water, discover how to recognise drinking fountains, find out who looks after them, where tap water comes from and how we can all become more conscious of the ways in which we use drinking water. Karlsruhe is an important “water and fountain city” in Germany with a particularly diverse drinking fountain culture. The public can quench their thirst at 36 public drinking fountains.
